JACK SMITH [Untitled, 1958-1962, pre-Flaming Creatures color apartment sessions, 1958-59]

“Jack Smith is the only person I would ever copy” – Andy Warhol. “The only true underground filmmaker” – John Waters. And, John Vaccaro was deeply influenced by Smith’s aesthetics. While all three were part of the 1960s gay arts movement, Vaccaro and Smith refuted the idea that their sexual orientation was responsible for their art.

One of founding fathers of performance art, experimental theater, underground cinema and has been critically recognized as a master photographer, Smith unequivocally resisted and upturned accepted conventions, whether artistic, moral or legal. Irreverent in tone and delirious in effect, Smith’s works, such as Flaming Creatures (1962) are both wildly camp and subtly polemical. It is still his most notorious, not only because it convincingly broke a number of taboos but because it was banned practically everyplace it was shown.
